The Harriers welcome all to this low key affair where you can choose to cruise or kick butt. Having fun is the goal. Everyone is encouraged to participate regardless of their ability. Post-race refreshments will be served. For more information, visit www.houstonharriers.com.

Hi all, I hope everyone had a great running weekend, starting with the Expo, the Olympic Trials, and then the Houston Marathon (or ½ Marathon, in my case). It was a pretty intensive round of running experiences, and while I was hoping that the speed flying around Buffalo Bayou on Saturday would inspire my legs on Sunday, unfortunately not. I felt great running back to my house after watching the trials, but as usual, one can’t plan for happy legs, so my legs just felt average on Sunday. But on to more inspiring stuff:

Woodlands Marathon/Half Marathon Call for Pacers: The Woodlands Marathon and Half Marathon will take place on March 3 in The Woodlands, TX.  The pace team coordinator, Randy Bradley, still needs volunteers for several pace team slots for both the full and the half.  The pacers will receive a free entry into the event, and in addition to the normal runner perks for the event they pace, they will receive a customized pacer singlet and hat.  If you’re interested, please contact Randy

Bayou City Classic 10K:

Each year HARRA puts on the annual Bayou City Classic 10K Race. Next year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 10, and we very excited to announce that it will also include a 5K Fun Run. The Bayou City Classic is the only race that HARRA puts on each year and all the proceeds are donated to the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.  Given the drought we experienced this past summer, the 2012 race really needs your support!  The City of Houston and Houston Parks and Recreation are doing everything they can to maintain the beauty of Memorial Park. The cost of maintaining the park as a result of the drought has reached into the millions.  Thanks to Apache Corporation’s love of our parks and trail systems, they have signed on as the sponsor of this event and have dubbed the race “Run for the Trees”. In addition to registering at www.bayoucityclassic.org, we would like each of you to consider further supporting the race by purchasing a sponsorship opportunity.  These sponsorship opportunities can be purchased by private individuals or companies/organizations and are tax deductible due to HARRA’s 501c 3 status.

1)  $250         Mile markers (4 have already been purchased)

2)  $250         Promotional decal for sponsor race car

3)  $250         Promotional decal for roaming car

4)  $750         Promotional banner on course

5)  $1000       Promotional banner on course bridge

6)  $1000       Post-race tent, table and chairs (10x10)

7)  $1000       Logo on back of shirts

8)  $1000       Water stop sponsorship

9) $1000        Promotional decal on street (3’x5’)

10) $1500      Logo on one sleeve of shirt

To show your support, please contact either Peter Birckhead (peterbirckhead@comcast.net), Jill DeVay (jdevay@swbell.net) or Loren Sheffer (loren@runningmags.com) for more information.  Thank you!

HARRA Runner of the Season

The results for the HARRA Runner of the Season have been updated to include results from the Metric Marathon.  Results can be seen here.

Did You Earn an Ironfoot Award in Fall 2010 or Spring 2011?

Ironfoot recipients are those who participated in all the races of that particular season's HARRA series, or those who ran all-but-one race and volunteered for the one run they missed.  If this is you, stop by the HARRA tent after this weekend's 30K to claim your prize.  And congratulations!

Chevron Houston Marathon Needs Pace Leaders

The Chevron Houston Marathon currently needs pace leaders for next month's marathon.   They need two leaders at 3:20 and two at 3:30; runners interested in these spots must be trained and capable of running at least 15 minutes faster than the pace goal and recognize they are expected to finish within about two minutes of the goal on a bad day.  Perks to being a pace team leader include refunt of the entry fee and receiving race apparel, including running shoes.

If this sounds like you, please contact the Arlen Isham, the Pace Team Coordinator at aisham@consolidated.net

HARRA Fall Series

Only two races remain in the HARRA Fall Series - the 30K this weekend and the full marathon next month.   It's not too late to register for the 30K, but the marathon, on the other hand....

(Sun.) 12/11 - Finish Line Sports Sugar Land 30K, 6:30 a.m., $55 through November 30, www.signmeup.com
(Sun.) 1/15 - Chevron Houston Marathon, SOLD OUT, www.chevronhoustonmarathon.com

Volunteer Slots for the Olympic Trials Marathon

Did you know that each athlete at the Olympic Trials will be able to prepare 9 bottles with the nutritional fluid of their choice and have it available to him or her personally at the Elite Fluid Stations?    With about 250 runners expected, that mean 2250 individual bottles will need to be deployed accurately on the right table in the right position at the right milepoint at the right time.   The logistics of this is daunting but plans are in place to make it happen.   212 volunteers, nearly all experienced runners, will be on course to get it right.

Most volunteers are returnees from last year's half marathon championship, but there are still approximately 20 spaces left for new volunteers who wish to join the Elite Fluid Station volunteer crew on Saturday morning.   These slots will be available to HARRA members on a first come, first served basis.  Email Joe Carey at jecarey@sbcglobal.net who will give you sign up instructions.  Once the remaining spaces are gone, you will go on a waiting list as there are bound to be a few more needed when the big day rolls around.

The Bayou City Classic

Planning for the 35th Annual Bayou City Classic 10K and 5K Fun Run is proceeding forward and runners may want to put this race on their calendar. The run will be on  Saturday, March 10, 2012 in downtown Houston. Recruit your centipede team and/or get that costume out of the closet. Live band will perform at the start, on the course and at the post-race party.

New for 2012 is the addition of a 5K Fun Run in order to encourage all runners and walkers regardless of age and ability to participate in the event.

Proceeds benefit improvements in Houston Parks.  Apache Corporation has joined the event as a title sponsor along with other generous sponsors. In addition to age group awards, there will be cash prizes for the top male and female runners. DesertView Services will award cash prizes to the “runners' choice” for the Best Art Car.

For more information or to register early, visit here.

Book from a Running Professor

We received the following email from Dr. Cathy Utzschneider and thought it might be a good gift idea for interested female runners:

I am a Boston College professor of competitive performance, writer for National Masters News and national site coach for www.women-running-together.com who writes about women runners. I am interested in any stories on women from your club, and also want to tell you about a new running book for women (in time for the holidays) -- MOVE! How Women Can Achieve Athletic Goals At Any Age (you can  find it on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=MOVE%21+How+Women+Can+Achieve+Athletic+Goals&x=0&y=0). I The foreword is by Zola Budd, and the book has received 5 stars from all eight reviewers.

Memorial Park Conservancy "Tree Stump"

Have you noticed a sad change in the amount of trees at Memorial Park?  Us, too.  The Memorial Park Conservancy has installed a "tree stump" at the 0 mile marker for donations for park maintenance, ie, improving the main trail.   Foresters have estimated that over 30% of the trees have already died and expect many more to die over the next several years.  Do your part to protect our trees - just think of how much money could be gained if just half the park's users contributed $1 per week.

Thanksgiving Race

The annual TXU Energy Turkey Trot 5K will take place on Thursday morning at the Galleria Dillards parking lot.  More information can be found at http://www.shelteringarms.org/Trot2010/register.html

The Saturday after Thanksgiving has always been a special time for HARRA as the organization hosts the Just For Kids Fun Run.  And not only do we need your involvement by volunteering, like so many of you do every holiday season, but we also are looking for a Race Director.

Been involved in a race your club has put on or helped with another event, but always wanted to lead an effort - especially that benefitted our next generation of runners?  Don't be afraid.  HARRA has more or less a "guidebook" to help you through the process.  We need a little bit of your time, energy, commitment and passion to provide our kids their own running event!

HARRA News

We apologize for being a day or two off the mark from last Sunday.

PARTY IN THE PARK ... ANOTHER SUCCESS

Many thanks to HARRA At-Large Board Member Lisa Fletcher for continuing the fine tradition that the late Mark Fraser and so many others before have set in helping introduce HARRA and our affiliated clubs to Houston's area runners at Memorial Park last Saturday.

POWER IN MOTION

HARRA's beginner training program, Power in Motion, starts Wednesday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Park.  Power in Motion is a HARRA program designed to introduce beginning runners at all capability levels to running.

The 10-week program, which meets every Wednesday night, will train and coach its participants - affectionately known as PIMsters - culminate with the Run With The Saints 5K in west Houston on Saturday, November 5.

The $39 registration fees includes a tech t-shirt, full workout schedule, personalized coaching, seminars and lots of fun.  Registration is open now at www.powerinmotion.org.  Power in Motion is a great program for someone wanting to get started, but not so ambitious they want to jump right into a marathon.  It is also good for those who may have "fallen off the wagon" and need to get re-motivated.

Interested individuals are invited to visit www.powerinmotion.org for more information and to register for the program which gets underway in just over two weeks.

THIS WEEKEND'S EVENTS

Want to race this weekend?  There certainly are plenty of options as we're not far from the official start of the fall racing season.

The HOUSTON YOUNG LAWYERS FOUNDATION 5K is set for Saturday, August 27 at 7:30 a.m. at Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston.  This former Thursday night favorite has shifted to a new date and time, but the Allen Parkway course remains the same!  Online registration closes on Thursday with packet pickup at Finish Strong Sports on Thursday and Friday, August 25 and 26.

The race will be chip-timed, with drawings for door prizes after the race at the post-race party and free race day parking will be available at the Heritage Society across from Sam Houston Park behind the Kellum-Noble House.  The HYLF 5K benefits the organization's Grant Program and Change Happens!

The "No Label Brewery" in Katy on Saturday plays host to the DUCK RUN 4-Miler at 8:00 a.m.  Supporting Texas Ducks Unlimited, the race's turnaround point is at the aptly-named Duck Pond at Mark Jo Peckham Park.  For more information, please visit www.dufunrun.com/.

Need to run a little longer perhaps?  Then there's the LAKE HOUSTON 10K/5K presented by Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital at 7:15 a.m. at Kings Harbor on Lake Houston.  For more information on the second annual event, please visit www.lakehouston10k5k.com/.

RUNNING FOR FUN?

Well, it's the 11th annual Bay Area Running Club (BARC) Pub Crawl.  This year, the theme is "Up To Eleven".  The ever-growing event will rock on from Carlos's Beer Garden at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.

BARCers remind potential participants of these reminders:

- You can park your car at Club Cabo at the end and be shuttled to the start at 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.  Anyone willing to shuttle others should come to Club Cabo and help.

- It will be a record temperature, plan accordingly.   There is water at every one of the 9 establishment and 2 water stops.

- It is not a race and it is not chip timed.  Instead chips can be consumed at Mamacitas and Gabachos.  If you must compete, then wear a great costume and you will win friends and admiration for a few hours.

- Ensure you have a designated driver if you will consume alcoholic beverages along the route.  Rock n Roll will never die, but you will if you are stupid.

- Map is here: http://www.barchouston.com/html/pub_crawl_2011_map.html

Did you know that 129 men and 166 women have already qualified for the Trials?  For the men, 68 qualified at the marathon distance while 47 and 14, respectively, punched their tickets to the Bayou City with qualifying times in the half marathon or 10K.

The women have seen 145 qualify at the marathon distance with another 11 and 10, respectively, in the half marathon and 10K.

Subject: We Need Help Finding a Sponsor

HARRA News

ATTENTION HARRA MEMBERS WE NEED YOUR HELP!

As many of you know the new “Memorial Park Outer Trail” officially opened June 16.  Mayor Parker, members of the HARRA Board, and the Memorial Park Conservancy were on hand for the event.  With over 10,000 runners using the park every day and most of the traffic on the Seymour-Leiberman Exer-Trail, a new trail is a real welcome addition to Memorial Park.  If you have not had a chance to see or use this great addition to our park I encourage you do so.

This new trail was funded by the Memorial Park Conservancy and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.  Each year HARRA makes a substantial donation to the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.  Much of the money donated by HARRA come from the proceeds of HARRA’s annual Bayou City Classic 10K race held each March in downtown Houston.  The 2012 edition will be held on Saturday, March 10.

HERE IS WHERE YOUR HELP COMES IN.

Up until this year, HEB Food Stores was the title sponsor for the race.  After a very successful 7 year partnership, HEB has decided to use their sponsorship dollars in other ways.  As a result, members of the Bayou City Classic Race Committee are seeking a new title sponsor for the event.  If anyone knows of an organization that might be interested in sponsoring this event please contact Co-Chairs of Fundraising Bayou City Classic 2012 Peter Birckhead at peterbirckhead@comcast.net or Mark Fraser at mffraser@swbell.net .

You do not have to do anything but put us in contact with the potential sponsor.  We will handle it from there.  You are welcome to help us if you wish, but it is not necessary.

Thanks for any help you can give us.  The money goes to something very dear to us all--running trails in the Houston area.

Run for a Really Good Reason

Memorial Park Conservancy is again an official Run for a Reason Charity for the Chevron Houston Marathon! The Run for a Reason program allows those runners who were not able to gain entry into the marathon or half marathon to enter through fundraising for their charity of choice. There are two ways to support Memorial Park Conservancy through the program: as a HERO, which is a one-time donation of $350 plus registration at the time of registration, and allows you to bypass the lottery, or as a Run for Registration participant. However, anyone can be a fundraiser, and all those who contribute $350 or more are automatically HEROs and will receive a special bib to wear on race day promoting Memorial Park Conservancy.

Please consider Memorial Park Conservancy when you register for the Chevron Houston Marathon or Aramco Half Marathon. For more information on the Run for a Reason program for the Conservancy, please contact Carol Watson, Director of Development, at

Coach Needed

My name is Heather and I am an employee with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation here in Houston. We have a half-marathon training program that raises vital needs for finding a cure to Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Right now, we are in need of 2 coaches; a run coach and a walk coach for our Las Vegas Rock N Roll Marathon season. Below are some “job descriptions”. This is a paid position, so if you have any runners that would be interested in coach, please have them contact me at hkerbow@ccfa.org

1.     Develop weekly training schedules for participants to run or walk a half marathon at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

2.     Attend 4 Informational Meetings (scheduled in early August 2011) to review and discuss the training program with potential participants.

3.     Develop training courses and secure park permits, if necessary, with the help of staff from CCFA.

4.     Lead group training sessions Saturday mornings over a 16 week training program.

5.     Establish water stops at appropriate mile markers along route for group training sessions. Establish necessary bathroom stops on route to accommodate our patients who are training. It is recommended every 2 miles for water/bathroom stops.

6.     Ensure that all participants are supported throughout group training session. Coach is to stay until every person finishes safely.

7.     Organize clinics throughout the season to teach participants on correct clothing, shoes, hydration, stretching, sports psychology, etc. Guest speakers are highly encouraged.

8.     Be available for staff and participants weekly via email, phone and in person for any questions relating to training for a half marathon.

9.     Assist staff and participants as necessary during event weekend (December 2-5, 2011) and ensure that all participants finish their race safely. All coaches on site event weekend support all Team Challenge Participants for CCFA.

Thank you in advance for any help you  might be able to provide.

Run for a Really Good Reason

.

For more information on the Run for a Reason program for the Conservancy, please contact Carol Watson, Director of Development, at

 carol@memorialparkconservancy.orgor at 713-863-8403. Thank you!
