11/14/2008 eDeerTracks (Ten For Texas Edition)
eDeer Tracks

Tomorrow is the day many of you have been waiting for – for a month! The third annual Ten For Texas will start Saturday at 7:30 a.m. on Market Street. And for many others, it will be Westward Ho for the Rock ‘N Roll San Antonio Marathon and Half Marathon.

Those of you running Ten For Texas, please make sure that you’re decked out in TWRC gear for two reasons – 1.) to continue to get the word out about our club and 2.) so the folks at the mile 8 water stop – oops, fueling station – can cheer for you. They’ll all be TWRC members supporting Bill Dwyer and Jon Walk’s Friends of the Running Community.

If 10 miles isn’t your distance and San Antonio isn’t your destination this weekend, there are two other local events this weekend to satisfy your quest for racing and potential hardware. The Spring Baptist Church’s Couples in Christ Class will be producing the Turkey Trot 5K on Saturday, November 15 at 7:30 a.m. The website is: http://www.couplesinchristsbc.org/turkeytrot/. The Keller Williams Hearth and Sole 10K/5K will be at Bear Creek Park in west Houston and will commence at 7:30 a.m. also. The Hearth and Sole event is $20 race day while the Turkey Trot 5K is $15. A bargain.

The Evite is out for the annual TWRC Holiday Party on Sunday, December 7. Please respond and make plans to attend! (There will be plenty of others there who will be sore from running Sunmart the day before. So soothe the suffering with some holiday cheer!)

Best wishes to Coach Green’s Highlanders as they try to send him out a winner … wow, for the last time …. and Shelby Hayes and Margo Lyons, Dana’s daughter, as both of The Woodlands cross country teams will be at the UIL 5A State Cross Country Meet in the morning in Round Rock.

The numbers were few at the HMSA Classical 25K, but the results were superb. Adrienne Langelier, 26, finished as the third overall female in 1:43:17, picking up hardware, cash and now putting herself on the radar of local female distance runners. Nancy Prejean and Jim Braden both picked up age group wins. Nancy is only one of two runners to have met the Chevron Houston Marathon qualifying standard in each of the first three HARRA Fall Series events this year and last year. The other is Baytown’s Larry Tidwell. Stephen Smith was 6th in a very competitive 55-59 age group with a time of 1:57:57.

Carlos Ortegon led the way for TWRCers at Rocky Raccoon 50K last Saturday as he finished 12th overall in 4:55:02. Les Ellsworth is going through all of the distances – 100-miler in October, 50-miler in October, 50K in November. At this rate, Les will be ready for the Willis Wildkat 5K the weekend after Sunmart. Les and Allen Wrinkle finished within 30 seconds of each other.

Please keep in mind the Montgomery County Endurance Athlete of the Year Awards and the fact that nominations for the awards will close on Sunday evening, December 7. You should have received an e-mail – with an FAQ document attached -- from Bill Dwyer. Please nominate early and often for the best runners, trail/ultra runners and multi-sport athletes from Montgomery County.

THIS WEEK’S RUNNING SAFETY TIP (Courtesy of the RRCA)
9. Avoid unpopulated areas, deserted streets, and overgrown trails. Especially avoid unlit areas, especially at night. Run clear of parked cars or bushes.

6. What are signs or symptoms of exercise-associated hyponatremia? Symptoms become pronounced when serum sodium levels fall below 135 mmol/L and water begins to
flow into the body cells. Early symptoms include puffiness (e.g., swollen fingers, tight fitting watch), nausea, vomiting, progressively worsening headache, and a sense of "just not feeling right." More serious symptoms will show when worsening brain swelling leads to confusion, irritability, agitation, and seizures. Left untreated, hyponatremia can progress to serious brain and lung swelling, coma and death. The remainder may be found at: http://tinyurl.com/4r9grm

IMPORTANT CHEVRON HOUSTONMARATHON DEADLINES!!
1. If you are injured and cannot run, the deadline to TRANSFER your registration to another runner is November 20.
2. If you want to change races (move from the half to the full or vice versa), you must do this by December 10.

Enjoying eDeerTracks?: We hope you are. It is a new member benefit to your TWRC membership. The TWRC membership year, of course, started on Tuesday, July 1 and corresponds with the Houston Area Road Runners Association (HARRA) membership year. TWRC memberships are one-year memberships that expire on June 30. Annual dues are $20 for an individual and $25 for a family. A membership application can be found on page 2 of the most recent August 2008 edition of “Deer Tracks” that can be found on the club website underneath the “Newsletters” tab at http://www.thewoodlandsrunningclub.org/. Don’t run the risk of missing out on this weekly source of information … besides belonging to a group of pretty cool people!

Join HARRA: TWRC will attempt this year to field more competitive teams in HARRA’s Fall Series of races (see below). For the club to score points in the inner-club competition, members have to also be HARRA members. More information can be found in the May and June editions of “Deer Tracks”. There is a paper membership application on page 4 of the May 2008 edition of “Deer Tracks” and online membership can be accomplished at http://www.harra.org/.

The Remainder of the HARRA Fall Series

Dec. 14 (Sun) Sugar Land Lakes of Williams Ranch 30K; Sugar Land, 7:00 a.m.
Jan. 18 (Sun) Chevron Houston Marathon, Houston, 7:00 a.m.

Long Runs?: You betcha, TWRC has them! JoAnn Blakeley’s a faster marathoner than Sarah Palin (see ING NYC Marathon!), but she slows down enough to graciously coordinate these for us! They’re typically early on Sunday mornings and at a location to satisfy that caffeine fix after the run. If you have a question about the long runs, please e-mail JoAnn at joann_blakeley@sbcglobal.net. Here’s the schedule for the rest of November:

Sun., Nov. 16 – Brooklyn Café in the Panther Creek Village Center; 5:40 a.m. for a 7-mile loop and 6:45 a.m. for a 10-mile loop. Mileage – 7 & 10 miles.
Sat., Nov. 22 – Meet at HEB Market Street for Memorial Park (Houston) run; 7:00 a.m. leaving at 7:15 a.m. for 8:00 a.m. run. Mileage – 10 & 18 miles. After the run, a shower at Memorial Park, lunch at Beck’s and dessert will be a tour of Saint Arnold’s Brewery.

Trail RunsSusie Schreiber usually gathers a group together every Saturday morning (so as not to conflict with the long run Sunday group.) Her weekly reminder e-mail that announces the meeting location and time and where the group will usually goes out on Thursday evenings or during the day on Fridays. Most weeks, the group gathers at the Exxon station on Greenbridge & 242 to run at Jones State Park. To get on Susie’s trail runners e-mail list, please contact her at susieschreiber@lukeslocker.com.

General Membership Meeting and Holiday Party: The club’s third general membership meeting, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, September 14, has officially been rescheduled as part of the TWRC Holiday Party that will be at Town Hall Texas on Sunday, December 7. Look for the starting time to be somewhere between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Coach Green, who was scheduled to be our featured speaker at the September meeting, will not be able to join us as he’ll be in Portland, Oregon for the Nike Cross Nationals.

President Tony Allison advises that at least one order of business will be conducted at the meeting and that will be to vote on an amendment to the By-Laws that would authorize the board to elect up to two additional board members in addition to the coaches’ representative. These additional board members would have limited voting power, but would serve as critical resources for the club as it continues to grow in numbers and activities.

’09 General Membership Meeting and Post-Houston Marathon Party: Will be at Goose’s Acre at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18. Let’s rock the place with more than 100 of us there!

MontgomeryCounty Triple: The Fall ’08 version is once again taking shape! Its creators – Friends of the Running Community - are hoping that the turnout for the third annual Runfest will be greater than the first two years. The City of Conroe has announced its 4th annual Turkey Trot 5K to once again be the day after Thanksgiving – Friday, November 28 - at Conroe’s Carl Barton, Jr. Park. In fact, a few of our members – Joseph Mazone, Jacob Mazone, Mike Mendeck and Stephen Smith – can be seen on the cover of the City of Conroe’s Parks and Recreation Playbook: http://www.cityofconroe.org/images/stories/parks/downloads/playbook.pdf

The third and final race, which also includes the immensely popular Turkey Day classic, “Run Thru The Woods”, will be announced at a later time – and there’s even talk of a Fat Ass 50K, which includes one of old The Woodlands Marathon courses -- on Sunday, November 30. Stay tuned!
