11/07/2008 eDeerTracks (Big Event Edition)
eDeer Tracks
While many of our club members had huge races last weekend, this weekend features four events that caught our eye:

1. Rocky Raccoon 25K/50K on Saturday in Huntsville State Park (Holden Choi and Jon Walk will be there to run the 25K and the club tent may make an appearance to be able to stash gear. If you’re planning on running it, give us a shout on Friday.)
2. HMSA Classical 25K on Sunday in downtown Houston (Adrienne Langelier will be shooting for an invited runner spot as she’ll face some tougher women’s competition in the Open division; Bill Dwyer will have the tent set up in the Fish Plaza at the Wortham Center.)
3. Iron Star Triathlon on Sunday, which is back at Del Lago this year   It is the sixth year for this event and if you see race director Greg Pennington, congratulate him on his Ironman Florida finish last Saturday. (Ditto. Let us know if you’re competing in this event. See below about Lonestar Multisports’ need for run course volunteers.)
4. UIL 5A Region II Cross Country Meet on Saturday in Arlington (Coach Green’s harriers make another trip to punch their ticket to the state meet. Shelby Hayes and Dana Lyons’ daughter, Margo, will help lead the Lady Highlanders for the girls.)

The TWRC Board crashed Dan Jordan’s Ironman party at Goose’s Acre for a few moments Thursday night, but his accomplishment was well worth celebrating. Jordan and John Laskowski were two of seven MontgomeryCounty men that finished Ironman Florida last Saturday. Here’s what Jon Walk wrote in his Courier running column on Tuesday:

Conroe veterinarian Dan Jordan, 51, didn’t start his first Ironman in the best position as he was the last of the county’s triathletes out of the water in 1:29:52. Somewhere after mile 72 on the bike, Jordan’s day began to change. He improved 2.67 miles per hour over the last 39 miles of the bike course before recording the 10th fastest marathon (3:45:55) in his age group to move up an     incredible 87 spots in his age group. Jordan finished in 11:37:11 along with Team Strive teammate John Laskowski. The 39-year-old native of The Woodlands, who like Jordan is coached by The Woodlands’ Kim Hager, methodically put together an impressive debut time of 12:13:25.

Meanwhile, Tony and Amy Allison continue to collect states to do warm-up races en route to The Weather Channel Atlanta Marathon on Thanksgiving Day (snapping Tony’s long Run Thru The Woods streak). Racing nearly as often as Lou Wilson (who’s still recovering from a post-Ike injury), the husband-and-wife team ran a 15K two weeks ago in Omaha, Nebraska before finishing a half marathon at the Bass Pro Shops Half Marathon in Springfield, Missouri.

Tony reported that “this was an awesome course/race (but hilly) and was part of a 9-day Outdoor Fitness Festival sponsored by Bass Pro Shops.  The first weekend featured trail runs, bike races and canoe races; then other activities during the week; and then on the last weekend a 5K and 10K on Saturday and with a Half Marathon and Marathon on Sunday. Guest attendees included Bill Rodgers, Jeff Galloway, Frank Shorter and Dick Beardsley to name a few.  This is the 2nd annual Outdoor Fitness Festival and I predict will grow larger in the future.”

And there was this kind of a large race in New York City on Sunday.

Six club members, led by the “Queen of the Queensboro Bridge”, JoAnn Blakeley, and her dazzling 3:20:18 performance, beat up the five-borough course in the ING New York City Marathon. Johanne Skorve’s 3:37:48 was also a Boston qualifier

5. What is hyponatremia? Hyponatremia is defined as a serum sodium level (concentration of sodium in the blood) less than 135 mmol/L. Exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) refers to hyponatremia that is induced by excessive fluid intake during prolonged physical activity such as a slow marathon (> 4 hours). The remainder may be found at: http://tinyurl.com/4r9grm

Trivia Question: How many club members have done Ten For Texas the last two years?
(See the answer at the end!)

IMPORTANT CHEVRON HOUSTONMARATHON DEADLINES!!
1. If you are injured and cannot run, the deadline to TRANSFER your registration to another runner is November 20.
2. If you want to change races (move from the half to the full or vice versa), you must do this by December 10.

Enjoying eDeerTracks?: We hope you are. It is a new member benefit to your TWRC membership. The TWRC membership year, of course, started on Tuesday, July 1 and corresponds with the Houston Area Road Runners Association (HARRA) membership year. TWRC memberships are one-year memberships that expire on June 30. Annual dues are $20 for an individual and $25 for a family. A membership application can be found on page 2 of the most recent August 2008 edition of “Deer Tracks” that can be found on the club website underneath the “Newsletters” tab at http://www.thewoodlandsrunningclub.org/. Don’t run the risk of missing out on this weekly source of information … besides belonging to a group of pretty cool people!

Join HARRA: TWRC will attempt this year to field more competitive teams in HARRA’s Fall Series of races (see below). For the club to score points in the inner-club competition, members have to also be HARRA members. More information can be found in the May and June editions of “Deer Tracks”. There is a paper membership application on page 4 of the May 2008 edition of “Deer Tracks” and online membership can be accomplished at http://www.harra.org/.

Long Runs?: You betcha, TWRC has them! JoAnn Blakeley’s a faster marathoner than Sarah Palin (see ING NYC Marathon!), but she slows down enough to graciously coordinate these for us! They’re typically early on Sunday mornings and at a location to satisfy that caffeine fix after the run. If you have a question about the long runs, please e-mail JoAnn at joann_blakeley@sbcglobal.net. Here’s the schedule for the rest of November:

Sun., Nov. 9 – Starbucks/Jamba Juice on Market Street, 6:45 a.m; Mileage – 10 miles.
Sun., Nov. 16 – Brooklyn Café in the Panther Creek Village Center; 5:40 a.m. for a 7-mile loop and 6:45 a.m. for a 10-mile loop. Mileage – 7 & 10 miles.

Trail RunsSusie Schreiber usually gathers a group together every Saturday morning (so as not to conflict with the long run Sunday group.) Her weekly reminder e-mail that announces the meeting location and time and where the group will usually goes out on Thursday evenings or during the day on Fridays. Most weeks, the group gathers at the Exxon station on Greenbridge & 242 to run at Jones State Park. To get on Susie’s trail runners e-mail list, please contact her at susieschreiber@lukeslocker.com.

This weeks message from Susie for Nov 8 -  "Jones is still closed & Huntsville has Rocky Raccoon tomorrow so we are going to run the old McCullough trail loop         (10 miles)  We will meet at the McCullough school parking lot and leave around 6 a.m.

Iron Star Triathlon Volunteer Opportunity: TWRC member and Lonestar Multisport Club president Nora Wilson (via a friendly reminder e-mail from Susie) tells us that Jim Griffis is looking for assistance in providing volunteers on the run course for the upcoming Iron Star Half Ironman race, scheduled for Sunday, November 9, 2008. Jim tells us that while there are those who have already expressed a desire to volunteer, more are definitely needed (perhaps up to two shifts of 15 individuals each). Volunteers will receive water, Heed and other goodies while on the run course.

If you are interested in helping out, please reach out to Jim at newsletters@lonestarmultisport.org or click on the following Internet link -- http://www.griffnet.com/comments4.htm.

Ten For Texas General Volunteer OpportunityVolunteers are needed to help make the race a great experience for all participants. Volunteers will receive a specially designed T-shirt and an invitation to the post-race party. Click here for a volunteer application. For further details, e-mail anicks@catw-tx.org.

Ten For Texas Water Stop!: Friends of the Running Community – which promotes the Montgomery County Triple - realizes that the change of Ten For Texas to Saturday, November 15 has thrown a curve into the racing plans of many.

We believe that Ten For Texas is a very well done race that represents most of our hometowns to the rest of the greater Houston area running community.  The bottom line is that it *is* one of our hometown races.

While many of you may be heading to participate in what will prove to become Texas' largest marathon and half marathon in San Antonio, Friends of the Running Community invites you to join us in volunteering to man a water stop during Ten For Texas before you drive to the Expo in San Antonio, pick your packet up and prepare to race.

And if this pleasant appeal isn’t enough for you to consider helping us, we've an additional caveat:  Volunteer to work a Ten For Texas water stop with Friends of the Running Community *and* run all three races of the Montgomery County Triple (to be announced) and yes, your pine cone award will have four (4) pine cones!

Please help us continue to give everything we can back to our local running community.

General Membership Meeting and Holiday Party: The club’s third general membership meeting, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, September 14, has officially been rescheduled as part of the TWRC Holiday Party that will be at Town Hall Texas on Sunday, December 7. Look for the starting time to be somewhere between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Coach Green, who was scheduled to be our featured speaker at the September meeting, will not be able to join us as he’ll be in Portland, Oregon for the Nike Cross Nationals.

President Tony Allison advises that at least one order of business will be conducted at the meeting and that will be to vote on an amendment to the By-Laws that would authorize the board to elect up to two additional board members in addition to the coaches’ representative. These additional board members would have limited voting power, but would serve as critical resources for the club as it continues to grow in numbers and activities.

’09 General Membership Meeting and Post-Houston Marathon Party: Will be at Goose’s Acre at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18. Let’s rock the place with more than 100 of us there!

MontgomeryCounty Triple: The Fall ’08 version is once again taking shape! Its creators – Friends of the Running Community - are hoping that the turnout for the third annual Runfest will be greater than the first two years. The City of Conroe has announced its 4th annual Turkey Trot 5K to once again be the day after Thanksgiving – Friday, November 28 - at Conroe’s Carl Barton, Jr. Park. In fact, a few of our members – Joseph Mazone, Jacob Mazone, Mike Mendeck and Stephen Smith – can be seen on the cover of the City of Conroe’s Parks and Recreation Playbook: http://www.cityofconroe.org/images/stories/parks/downloads/playbook.pdf

The third and final race, which also includes the immensely popular Turkey Day classic, “Run Thru The Woods”, will be announced at a later time – and there’s even talk of a Fat Ass 50K, which includes one of old The Woodlands Marathon courses -- on Sunday, November 30. Stay tuned!
