10/17/2008 eDeerTracks (Grow The Club Edition)
eDeer Tracks
Ghosts, spooks and goblins have no place in running, especially during a cross country race! Can you imagine running at full speed, your heart’s racing and you’re going into oxygen debt and all of a sudden, Bigfoot steps out of the woods! What a scary thought – even if you knew it was Bill or Jon dressed up!

Be safe if you’re going to be out and partying tonight and/or the remainder of this weekend, and watch out when you’re running or riding for others who may not be as sound of thought as you are. We want to see you on a starting line here soon!

We go away for one week, and you all put on a full page of results. Wow! And every time we scroll the membership list, we perpetually worry that we’ll miss a result here or there. That’s what really scares us at Halloween! Please forgive us ahead of time … but drop us a line at bdwyer2@comcast.net and we’ll get it in here and in “Deer Tracks”.

Marathons. Love ‘em, hate ‘em. Kristin Collins loves them, especially when she reels off a nice, new sub 4-hour PR (3:54:28) in San Francisco two weekends ago. We saw the pictures. There was no wiping the smile off of her face at mile 25. Wish we all looked that happy at that point in the race – and still PR. Kristin threw in a third-place age group award at the Pumpkin Run 5K downtown last Saturday for good measure.

Sabrina Hurst gave herself a nice early birthday present last Sunday in Washington, D.C. with an equally nice 3:52:58 at the Marine Corps Marathon. Semper fi, Sabrina.

Our northernmost member Ken Hardwick keeps doing well everytime we look at results from that godforsaken state called Oklahoma. (We’re just kidding, Ken! Kind of. You know what they say about Oklahoma: That their roads are paid for by Texas speeders.) Ken’s doing a little speeding of his own with a third-place age group award two weeks ago and a fine showing at the popular Tulsa Run 15K – one race we’ve always wanted to get up there and do.

After finishing the Arkansas Traveller 100 (yeah, that’s right, miles) earlier in the month, Les Ellsworth, two weeks later, was the second masters finisher in the Palo Duro Canyon 50-Miler. One heck of a recovery run.

Susan Rouse kept the state marathon leader board moving as she nailed down state number 24 in Indianapolis two weeks ago with a sterling 3:30:39. Susan’s another one that you cannot wipe a smile off of her face, especially when she’s running. She keeps the pressure up on Tony Allison and Geri Henry. But there’s something about some Ironman competition in Arizona that she has in front of her in three weeks. We know that Sue – and the rest of the TWRCers training for it – will do well.

Speaking of Ironmans, Dan Jordan and John Laskowski are in the Sunshine state for tomorrow’s Ironman Florida. Dan will be wearing bib number 1763 and John will be wearing bib number 950 (kind of like KPRC). Check them out this weekend at Ironman.com. And if you’ve never been to an Ironman competition in person, then check out watching people finish on their streaming webcam. It is still a very powerful experience to watch. (And no, Dana-Sue, not yet.)

And eight club members will get the chance on Sunday to run one of the greatest spectacles in road racing – the ING New York City Marathon! It is an experience that every marathoner should try and do once in their life.

Audrey Manchester won her age group at the Du The Bear Duathlon two weekends ago while Jacob Mazone gets ready for Ten For Texas and Run Thru The Woods with his best ever time of 16:37 at Barbara Bush Elementary for a Run The Woodlands 5K.

And then to top it all off … 26 club members at the Koala Health and Wellness Centers/Luke’s Locker Half Marathon last Sunday in downtown Houston. Wow! Although we didn’t get to see all of you either on the course or at the TWRC Big White Tent, congratulations to all of you who participated. Sheila Carmody led the way with a third-place age group finish of 1:30:32. If our collective memory is correct, that makes Sheila a hardware winner twice in just her second race of the year. Nancy Prejean and Jim Braden won their age groups, pretty much as expected, but the second best finish – and hardware to go with it – belonged to 18-year-old Michael Attanucci with a 1:32:54 showing. That’s a scary number, especially for the course of 12 underpasses. His dad, Vincent, was not too far behind with Stephen Smith and Bill Travis in close pursuit. And after finishing the fast, flat Chicago Marathon, Mary Kerschbaum was in extra need of the hill work as she ran the Allen Parkway course not once, but twice last weekend as she had joined Kristin, Ann and Carlos in doing the Pumpkin Run 5K.

Mary was also one of six club members who got in for the 25th anniversary MS150. Check out the list below!

Don’t forget about Luke’s Locker’s fourth anniversary in The Woodlands next week, running the HMSA Classical 25K next Sunday and the numerous volunteer opportunities listed below!

And drop us a line and tell us how your Texas Independence Relay team is coming along! The trash talk between the Road Warriors and the Battling Bloggers has already begun.

THIS WEEK’S RUNNING SAFETY TIP (Courtesy of the RRCA)
7. Run with a partner. Run with a dog.

THIS WEEK’S THE RIGHT WAY TO HYDRATE FOR MARATHONS TIP (Courtesy of the American Medical Athletic Association and the American Running Association)
4. How do I calculate my sweat rate? The easiest method to estimate your sweat rate is to weigh yourself nude and run for either ½ or 1 hour in the conditions and at the pace you expect to race. At the end of the run, strip down, towel off, and reweigh yourself nude. The difference in weight (ounces) is either half (if you ran for ½ hour) or equal (if you ran for an hour) to your sweat rate. No more than that amount should be replaced in each hour of your race. If you have determined that you need to drink 6 oz every 20 minutes, then you stick with that plan for longer runs. Drinking too much water or sports drink (overhydrating) can lead to hyponatremia. The remainder may be found at: http://tinyurl.com/4r9grm

Enjoying eDeerTracks?: We hope you are. It is a new member benefit to your TWRC membership. The TWRC membership year, of course, started on Tuesday, July 1 and corresponds with the Houston Area Road Runners Association (HARRA) membership year. TWRC memberships are one-year memberships that expire on June 30. Annual dues are $20 for an individual and $25 for a family. A membership application can be found on page 2 of the most recent August 2008 edition of “Deer Tracks” that can be found on the club website underneath the “Newsletters” tab at http://www.thewoodlandsrunningclub.org/. Don’t run the risk of missing out on this weekly source of information … besides belonging to a group of pretty cool people!

Join HARRA: TWRC will attempt this year to field more competitive teams in HARRA’s Fall Series of races (see below). For the club to score points in the inner-club competition, members have to also be HARRA members. More information can be found in the May and June editions of “Deer Tracks”. There is a paper membership application on page 4 of the May 2008 edition of “Deer Tracks” and online membership can be accomplished at http://www.harra.org/.

Long Runs?: You bet, TWRC has them! JoAnn Blakeley graciously coordinates these and they’re typically early on Sunday mornings and at a location to satisfy that caffeine fix after the run. If you have a question about the long runs, please e-mail JoAnn at joann_blakeley@sbcglobal.net. JoAnn will provide us with the rest of the schedule – including the Saturday, November 22 excursion to Memorial Park – when she gets back from running the ING New York City Marathon this weekend.

Trail RunsSusie Schreiber usually gathers a group together every Saturday morning (so as not to conflict with the long run Sunday group.) Her weekly reminder e-mail that announces the meeting location and time and where the group will usually goes out on Thursday evenings or during the day on Fridays. Most weeks, the group gathers at the Exxon station on Greenbridge & 242 to run at Jones State Park. To get on Susie’s trail runners e-mail list, please contact her at susieschreiber@lukeslocker.com.

Iron Star Triathlon Volunteer Opportunity: TWRC member and Lonestar Multisport Club president Nora Wilson (via a friendly reminder e-mail from Susie) tells us that Jim Griffis is looking for assistance in providing volunteers on the run course for the upcoming Iron Star Half Ironman race, scheduled for Sunday, November 9, 2008. Jim tells us that while there are those who have already expressed a desire to volunteer, more are definitely needed (perhaps up to two shifts of 15 individuals each). Volunteers will receive water, Heed and other goodies while on the run course.

If you are interested in helping out, please reach out to Jim at newsletters@lonestarmultisport.org or click on the following Internet link -- http://www.griffnet.com/comments4.htm.

Ten For Texas Volunteer OpportunityVolunteers are needed to help make the race a great experience for all participants. Volunteers will receive a specially designed T-shirt and an invitation to the post-race party. Click here for a volunteer application. For further details, e-mail anicks@catw-tx.org.

Ten For Texas Water Stop!: Friends of the Running Community – which promotes the Montgomery County Triple - realizes that the change of Ten For Texas to Saturday, November 15 has thrown a curve into the racing plans of many.

We believe that Ten For Texas is a very well done race that represents most of our hometowns to the rest of the greater Houston area running community.  The bottom line is that it *is* one of our hometown races.

While many of you may be heading to participate in what will prove to become Texas' largest marathon and half marathon in San Antonio, Friends of the Running Community invites you to join us in volunteering to man a water stop during Ten For Texas before you drive to the Expo in San Antonio, pick your packet up and prepare to race.

And if this pleasant appeal isn’t enough for you to consider helping us, we've an additional caveat:  Volunteer to work a Ten For Texas water stop with Friends of the Running Community *and* run all three races of the Montgomery County Triple (to be announced) and yes, your pine cone award will have four (4) pine cones!

Please help us continue to give everything we can back to our local running community.

General Membership Meeting and Holiday Party: The club’s third general membership meeting, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, September 14, has officially been rescheduled as part of the TWRC Holiday Party that will be at Town Hall Texas on Sunday, December 7. Look for the starting time to be somewhere between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Coach Green, who was scheduled to be our featured speaker at the September meeting, will not be able to join us as he’ll be in Portland, Oregon for the Nike Cross Nationals.

President Tony Allison advises that at least one order of business will be conducted at the meeting and that will be to vote on an amendment to the By-Laws that would authorize the board to elect up to two additional board members in addition to the coaches’ representative. These additional board members would have limited voting power, but would serve as critical resources for the club as it continues to grow in numbers and activities.

’09 General Membership Meeting and Post-Houston Marathon Party: Will be at Goose’s Acre at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18. Let’s rock the place with more than 100 of us there!

MontgomeryCounty Triple: The Fall ’08 version is once again taking shape! Its creators – Friends of the Running Community - are hoping that the turnout for the third annual Runfest will be greater than the first two years. The City of Conroe has announced its 4th annual Turkey Trot 5K to once again be the day after Thanksgiving – Friday, November 28 - at Conroe’s Carl Barton, Jr. Park. In fact, a few of our members – Joseph Mazone, Jacob Mazone, Mike Mendeck and Stephen Smith – can be seen on the cover of the City of Conroe’s Parks and Recreation Playbook: http://www.cityofconroe.org/images/stories/parks/downloads/playbook.pdf

The third and final race, which also includes the immensely popular Turkey Day classic, “Run Thru The Woods”, will be announced at a later time – and there’s even talk of a Fat Ass 50K, which includes one of old The Woodlands Marathon courses -- on Sunday, November 30. Stay tuned!
