The joy of a start-up anything – whether it’s a for-profit business, charitable organization or a running club like ours – is watching it grow. It takes a number of different people performing different tasks with different abilities all working toward the common good – and a common goal. We have that here at The Woodlands Running Club.
Even though the state would show us in operation in year three, the club, of course, has its roots over the last 20 years in Coach Green’s Wednesday night track group.
And this weekend, TWRC raced from Huntsville to Hawaii and the Midwest to the GulfCoast.
Hawaii is always fun to talk about first and, for Dana Lyons, deservedly so! After earning his spot this spring at Ironman Arizona, he competed at the Ford Ironman World Championships in Kona on Saturday and finished 17th in his age group with a time of 10:46:34 out of 99 finishers. Getting there in the first place is a heck of an accomplishment and then to know that you are one of the top 20 in the world in your sport in your age group, we can’t even begin to imagine what that’s got to feel like. Congratulations!
Twenty-two (22) of you ran the 30th annual Huntsville Half Marathon last Saturday. Karen Felicidario and her daughter, Lem, directed runners around and away from the Walls Unit. Bill Dwyer supplied over 200 traffic cones to the event. Jon Walk handled the finish line public address announcing duties (if you ever want Jon to just announce your name when you finish … never run an event before the event that’s he doing … ask Ann and Carlos) and his 13-year-old daughter, Waverly, sang the national anthem for the second straight year.
And you have to like how new club members sort of just fit right in. Adrienne Langelier defended her Huntsville Half Marathon title with an almost 8-minute PR while Heidi Hall comes out and takes second in her age group.
Eight minutes wasn’t enough for Richard McQuaide. He told us that he lopped 13 minutes off of his half marathon PR with a 1:49:42 finish. Wow!
We did a little looking at the past results from Huntsville and you’ve got to feel a little bit for Vincent Attanucci. He just can’t buy a bargain. Vincent has run Huntsville five straight years as it is part of his annual training plan for the White Rock Marathon in Dallas. Vincent was fourth in ’04 and third every year since. At least PennState – Vincent’s alma mater - is undefeated and ranked No. 3. Skip Moschell and Debbie Tripp took second in their age groups while Ana Rojas-Leboeuf, Steve Thomson and Ann Leoni joined Vincent.
Geri Henry continues to keep the pressure on Tony Allison as she completed a marathon in her 25th state on Saturday at the ING Hartford Marathon. Of course, the Hartford Marathon is really Bill Rodgers’ hometown marathon; not Boston. (Somebody, somewhere reading this will bring this up as a topic during Sunday’s run.) Tony is sitting at 28 with No. 29 due on Thanksgiving Day in Atlanta, Georgia. Hmmm … I guess Atlanta is the home base of Jeff Galloway. This is getting kind of fun! Kind of like football, “We’re in the third quarter, Tony 28, Geri 25.”
Patrick Morein is the club leader in the number of states for half marathons, but last Sunday he finished the Bank of America Chicago Marathon as did Mary Kerschbaum. He reported on his blog that “the crowd support for Chicago equaled NYC in places but was not consistent the entire course.” Check out his blog at http://geauxhalf.blogspot.com/.
Kristin Collins and Susie Schreiber are in San Francisco this weekend for the Nike Women’s Marathon. (Hmmm … that might mean that this week’s trail run – listed below - on Saturday may not happen.)
Stephen Smith and Nancy Prejean represented TWRC in the United Space Alliance 10-Miler in ClearLake on Sunday. Stephen was 10th in a tough age group and Nancy, well, she was just plain tough. She told us prior to the race – and even if she raced – that she was going out to run an 8-minute pace, and lo and behold, that’s exactly what she did.
Nancy, of course, qualified for the ’09 Chevron Houston Marathon as a local invited runner with her ’08 CHM performance. If she hadn’t already done so, she hit the qualifying standard for her age group (6069) and would have qualified on Sunday. Well done! (Bonus: Did you know that Nancy still has the best time ever in Texas marathoning for a 47-year-old woman in 3:07:14.)
And Audrey Manchester posted a first-place age group win Sunday at Tri Andy’s Triathlon in SugarLand. Did you know that Audrey is the top ranked triathlete in her age group by the South Midwest Region of USA Triathlon? Pretty impressive, if you ask us.
We told you that Lynnor Matheney was going to Kansas to run the Heartland 100 this past weekend. Folks that do 100 milers march to the beat of their own drummer. Lynnor tells us that she “wasn’t unable to finish but got incorrect info about cutoffs” and dropped at mile 90. Man, to be that close has got to hurt … a little bit, at least. She says that she feels good about the attempt, satisfied she can do the distance and will head to Oklahoma next month to do the second running of the Mother Road 100 along the original Route 66. Lynnor’s race report will be in the November edition of “Deer Tracks”.
Did you get in? No silly, the Chevron Houston Marathon has been sold out for months! (By the way, Dallas was past 50% on the way to 17,000 on October 6th) We’re talking about the 25th anniversary MS150. If you did, let us know so that we can put it on the “Training List” below. And when you do e-mail us, tell us what team you’ll be riding on!
THIS WEEK’S RUNNING SAFETY TIP (Courtesy of the RRCA)
6. Alter or vary your running route pattern; run in familiar areas if possible. In unfamiliar areas, such as while traveling, contact a local RRCA club or running store. Know where open businesses or stores are located in case of emergency.
THIS WEEK’S THE RIGHT WAY TO HYDRATE FOR MARATHONS TIP (Courtesy of the American Medical Athletic Association and the American Running Association)
3. What is the best way to avoid dehydration? The best way to avoid dehydration is to calculate your sweat rate and replace your anticipated losses throughout the run. A few (10-20) ounces of fluid about an hour before the race will help you start with adequate water in your system. The remainder may be found at: http://tinyurl.com/4r9grm

Trivia Question: Three club members posted a time in a 2007 Texas marathon that finished in the top 25 of their 5-year age group across the state, according to the TexStats 2007 Marathon Rankings. Can you name them?
*** Second Individual Race of HARRA Fall Series is Sunday, October 26 at Koala Health & Wellness Centers / Luke’s Locker Houston Half Marathon in Houston ***
The Woodlands Running Club Tent will be there!
General Membership Meeting and Holiday Party: The club’s third general membership meeting, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, September 14, has officially been rescheduled as part of the TWRC Holiday Party that will be at Town Hall Texas on Sunday, December 7. Look for the starting time to be somewhere between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Coach Green, who was scheduled to be our featured speaker at the September meeting, will not be able to join us as he’ll be in Portland, Oregon for the Nike Cross Nationals.
President Tony Allison advises that at least one order of business will be conducted at the meeting and that will be to vote on an amendment to the By-Laws that would authorize the board to elect up to two additional board members in addition to the coaches’ representative. These additional board members would have limited voting power, but would serve as critical resources for the club as it continues to grow in numbers and activities.
’09 General Membership Meeting and Post-Houston Marathon Party: Will be at Goose’s Acre at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18. Let’s rock the place with more than 100 of us there!
Enjoying eDeerTracks?: We hope you are. It is a new member benefit to your TWRC membership. The TWRC membership year, of course, started on Tuesday, July 1 and corresponds with the Houston Area Road Runners Association (HARRA) membership year. TWRC memberships are one-year memberships that expire on June 30. Annual dues are $20 for an individual and $25 for a family. A membership application can be found on page 2 of the most recent August 2008 edition of “Deer Tracks” that can be found on the club website underneath the “Newsletters” tab at http://www.thewoodlandsrunningclub.org/. Don’t run the risk of missing out on this weekly source of information … besides belonging to a group of pretty cool people!
Long Runs?: You bet, TWRC has them! JoAnn Blakeley graciously coordinates these and they’re typically early on Sunday mornings and at a location to satisfy that caffeine fix after the run. If you have a question about the long runs, please e-mail JoAnn at joann_blakeley@sbcglobal.net. Here’s the rest of October’s schedule:
Oct. 19 – Starbucks in the Pinecroft Center, 6:45 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. Mileage: 6.5 and 11 miles.
Oct. 26 – McCullough Junior High 7 a.m. Mileage: 10 miles.
Trail Runs: Susie Schreiber usually gathers a group together every Sunday morning. Her weekly reminder e-mail that announces the meeting location and time and where the group will usually goes out on Thursday evenings or during the day on Fridays. Most weeks, the group gathers at the Exxon station on Greenbridge & 242 to run at Jones State Park. To get on Susie’s trail runners e-mail, please contact her at susieschreiber@lukeslocker.com.
Join HARRA: TWRC will attempt this year to field more competitive teams in HARRA’s Fall Series of races (see below). For the club to score points in the inner-club competition, members have to also be HARRA members. More information can be found in the May and June editions of “Deer Tracks”. There is a paper membership application on page 4 of the May 2008 edition of “Deer Tracks” and online membership can be accomplished at http://www.harra.org/.
Ten For Texas Refunds: Refunds? Yes, refunds. Unless you’ve been living under a rock or in a bunker the last two weeks, Ten For Texas has been postponed from this Saturday, October 18 until Saturday, November 15. While race director Willie Fowlkes would love for you to be there in November, they are realistic that the race is the same weekend as the Rock ‘N Roll San Antonio Marathon, which will be the largest marathon and half marathon in Texas.
But if you must miss is it and want a refund (the entry fee less a $10 administrative fee), please refer to the race web page at www.thewoodlandsassociations.org. Parks and Recreation reported that refund request will only be accepted until Monday, October 20. Race registration fees will remain $45 until race day and race day registration will be $60.
Ten For Texas Water Stop!: Friends of the Running Community – which promotes the Montgomery County Triple - realizes that the change of Ten For Texas from this Saturday to Saturday, November 15 has thrown a curve into the racing plans of many.
We believe that Ten For Texas is a very well done race that represents most of our hometowns to the rest of the greater Houston area running community. The bottom line is that it *is* one of our hometown races.
While many of you may be heading to participate in what will prove to become Texas' largest marathon and half marathon in San Antonio, Friends of the Running Community invites you to join us in volunteering to man a water stop during Ten For Texas before you drive to the Expo in San Antonio, pick your packet up and prepare to race.
And if this pleasant appeal isn’t enough for you to consider helping us, we've an additional caveat: Volunteer to work a Ten For Texas water stop with Friends of the Running Community *and* run all three races of the Montgomery County Triple (to be announced) and yes, your pine cone award will have four (4) pine cones!
Please help us continue to give everything we can back to our local running community.
Bill Dwyer and Jon Walk

Trivia Answer: They are Dick Esselborn, Jim Braden and Susie Schreiber. Dick has the 19th fastest time in the 65-69 age group (4:10:06) while Jim Braden was 2nd in the 70 and over category with a 3:41:59 performance. (If you want one of Jim’s wry smiles, ask him about Jim Schleisman.) Finally, Susie’s 3:26:04 at the ’07 Chevron Houston Marathon netted her a 10th place listing behind Suzy Seeley and in front of Leana Sloan.
