Lots of exciting times going and we genuinely apologize for missing your weekly staple of information from those who the Terlingua Track Club’s Jack Lippincott calls “stat-wonks”.
Buck and Kerri Snyder, JoAnn Blakeley and Mark Cahill made club history two weekends ago as the first team ever to participate in the HARRA Cross Country Relay. They had a lot of fun, and if Buck can run the hills two months before competing in an Ironman, I think we all can next year. That is, run the cross country relay. Not finish an Ironman. We’ll cheer for those of you who choose the latter.
Speaking of Ironman, we’ll be represented in Hawaii tomorrow by Dana Lyons as he competes in the Ford Ironman World Championships at Kona. It isn’t too far fetched that Dana will come home with a top 10 age group finish. In fact, some of think that after scouting the competition that Dana, with a good race, could score a top 5. Don’t blame us for being homers!
This weekend Lynnor Matheney is scheduled to be in Cassoday, Kansas for the Heartland 100. She’ll be shooting for her second career 100-mile finish. “Leave It To” Les Ellsworth scored his third 100-mile finish last weekend at the Arkansas Traveller 100 with a time of 26:02:31.
100 miles. 800 meters. What’s 398 more times around the track? The week before, on Sunday, September 28, Stephen Smith took third place in his age group of the lesser of those two distances at the Texas Senior Games in Temple. Great job in posting a 2:34.87 in two trips around the track.
Seriously, we love your e-mails. Since we can’t run as fast as many of you, your communiques get our heart pumping extra fast - as if we were. Our club president Tony Allison wrote to inform us that he “and” his lovely wife, Amy, would be running The Weather Channel Atlanta Marathon on Thanksgiving Day. It’ll be state No. 29 and marathon No. 83 for Tony, who finished the Omaha Marathon on Sunday, September 28 in 3:49:52 – one of eight Texans to cross the marathon finish line. Amy was one of two Texans to finish the 10K in Omaha – in 53:56 – and will run her 11th career marathon in Atlanta.
Tony might be behind Gary Van Kuiken and Lou Wilson in the number of marathon state finishes and second to Lou in numbers of marathons, but he’s going to keep the pressure up on everyone on the push for continents in February. He and Amy are doing the Columbia Cruce De Los Andes in Patagonia. It is a 100k trail running race in three (3) stages with campsites. The objective? Cross the Andes and unite Argentina and Chile. Who knew “our” President would be engaged in his own form of nation-building? Obama and McCain have nothing on Tony.
And you can’t keep Ann Leoni away from Boston. Ann punched her first ticket to Boston at the 2005 Memphis Marathon with a 3:58:13 finish, her sixth career marathon. She PR’d a month later in Houston with a 3:57:11 effort before charting a 4:15:32 on the famed course in April 2006. However, that time was only good for ‘06 and ‘07. And the 3:59:14 in Little Rock the following March was only good for 2008. With a goal to run in it 2009, she needed another time. 4:04:59 in Tulsa last November and an oh-so-close 4:01:34 on New Year’s Day in Kingwood. But the prize came last Sunday in Minnesota – and with just 19 seconds to spare -- at the Twin Cities Marathon, Ann finished in 4:00:40, paced by Carlos Ortegon, and RTW’s all-time finisher leader makes the return trip this April. Congratulations!
In late August at the Friday Nights Invitational Open Race, TWRC went 1-2 when Andrew Perry beat Jacob Mazone; however, at last Friday’s Nike South Invitational Open Race, which was shortened to approximately 4,000 meters due to impending darkness, TWRC made it a clean sweep as Jacob Mazone outlegged Juan Flores and Lee Harlicker to the finish line. Twelve other club members were among the 44 total finishers.
Speaking of a baker’s dozen, that’s how many conquered the Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin course last Sunday. The group, which could form its own Texas Independence Relay team, was led by Michael Collins, Buck Snyder and Bruce Cobb. (Bruce won his age group.) The trio will be joined at IM Arizona in late November by Susan Rouse and Kim Hager. John Laskowski turned in a solid performance of 5:36:21 – good for 7th in the Clydesdale division – as he is less than a month away from his Ironman debut in Florida. Sue was fourth in her age group.
The Blantons and Russell McCoy secured the western border of the U.S. with a half marathon in San Jose (for Fran and Barry) while Russell knocked out the “MP3-friendly marathon” in Portland.
THIS WEEK’S RUNNING SAFETY TIP (Courtesy of the RRCA)
5. Trust your intuition about a person or an area. React on your intuition and avoid a person or situation if you’re unsure. If something tells you a situation is not “right”, it isn’t.

2. What are the signs of dehydration? Thrist is an indicator that you should start replacing your sweat losses. Signs and symptoms of worsening dehydration include headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, weakness, abnormal chills, thick saliva (i.e., difficult to spit), and irritability. Trivia Question: You read earlier that Les Ellsworth added state no. 2 last weekend in his 50 State 100-Miler quest. (We’re joking Les!) While many other club members have tried the Arkansas Traveller course, only two club members have finishes there. Can you name them?
*** First Individual Race of HARRA Fall Series is Sunday, October 12 at USA 10-Miler in Clear Lake ***
General Membership Meeting and Holiday Party: The club’s third general membership meeting, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, September 14, has officially been rescheduled as part of the TWRC Holiday Party that will be at Town Hall Texas on Sunday, December 7. Look for the starting time to be somewhere between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Coach Green, who was scheduled to be our featured speaker at the September meeting, will not be able to join us as he’ll be in Portland, Oregon for the Nike Cross Nationals.
President Tony Allison advises that at least one order of business will be conducted at the meeting and that will be to vote on an amendment to the By-Laws that would authorize the board to elect up to two additional board members in addition to the coaches’ representative. These additional board members would have limited voting power, but would serve as critical resources for the club as it continues to grow in numbers and activities.
’09 General Membership Meeting and Post-Houston Marathon Party: Will be at Goose’s Acre at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18. Let’s rock the place with more than 100 of us there!
Enjoying eDeerTracks?: We hope you are. It is a new member benefit to your TWRC membership. The TWRC membership year, of course, started on Tuesday, July 1 and corresponds with the Houston Area Road Runners Association (HARRA) membership year. TWRC memberships are one-year memberships that expire on June 30. Annual dues are $20 for an individual and $25 for a family. A membership application can be found on page 2 of the most recent August 2008 edition of “Deer Tracks” that can be found on the club website underneath the “Newsletters” tab at http://www.thewoodlandsrunningclub.org/. Don’t run the risk of missing out on this weekly source of information … besides belonging to a group of pretty cool people!
Long Runs?: You bet, TWRC has them! JoAnn Blakeley graciously coordinates these and they’re typically early on Sunday mornings and at a location to satisfy that caffeine fix after the run. If you have a question about the long runs, please e-mail JoAnn at joann_blakeley@sbcglobal.net. Here’s the rest of October’s schedule:
Oct. 12 – Brooklyn Café, 6:45 a.m. and 5:10 a.m. (for those who want to add 10 before). Mileage: 10 miles.
Oct. 19 – Starbucks in the Pinecroft Center, 6:45 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. Mileage: 6 and 10 miles.
Oct. 26 – Starbucks/Jamba Juice in Market Street, 6:45 a.m. Mileage: 6, 10 and 12 miles.
Trail Runs: Susie Schreiber usually gathers a group together every Sunday morning. Her weekly reminder e-mail that announces the meeting location and time and where the group will usually goes out on Thursday evenings or during the day on Fridays. Most weeks, the group gathers at the Exxon station on Greenbridge & 242 to run at Jones State Park. To get on Susie’s trail runners e-mail, please contact her at susieschreiber@lukeslocker.com.
Join HARRA: TWRC will attempt this year to field more competitive teams in HARRA’s Fall Series of races (see below). For the club to score points in the inner-club competition, members have to also be HARRA members. More information can be found in the May and June editions of “Deer Tracks”. There is a paper membership application on page 4 of the May 2008 edition of “Deer Tracks” and online membership can be accomplished at http://www.harra.org/.
Ten For Texas Refunds: Refunds? Yes, refunds. Unless you’ve been living under a rock or in a bunker the last two weeks, Ten For Texas has been postponed from next Saturday, October 18 until Saturday, November 15. While race director Willie Fowlkes would love for you to be there in November, they are realistic that the race is the same weekend as the Rock ‘N Roll San Antonio Marathon, which will be the largest marathon and half marathon in Texas.
But if you must miss is it and want a refund (the entry fee less a $10 administrative fee), please refer to the race web page at www.thewoodlandsassociations.org. Parks and Recreation reported that refund request will only be accepted until Monday, October 20. Race registration fees will remain $45 until race day and race day registration will be $60.

Montgomery County Triple: The Fall ’08 version is once again taking shape! Its creators – Friends of the Running Community - are hoping that the turnout for the third annual Runfest will be greater than the first two years. The City of Conroe has announced its 4th annual Turkey Trot 5K to once again be the day after Thanksgiving – Friday, November 28 - at Conroe’s Carl Barton, Jr. Park. In fact, a few of our members – Joseph Mazone, Jacob Mazone, Mike Mendeck and Stephen Smith – can be seen on the cover of the City of Conroe’s Parks and Recreation Playbook: http://www.cityofconroe.org/images/stories/parks/downloads/playbook.pdf
The third and final race, which also includes the immensely popular Turkey Day classic, “Run Thru The Woods”, will be announced at a later time – and there’s even talk of a Fat Ass 50K, which includes one of old The Woodlands Marathon courses -- on Sunday, November 30. Stay tuned!
